Driveways for Historic Shore Homes
Asphalt paving in Bay Head fits around history. The borough, incorporated in 1886 from Brick Township, is home to the Bay Head Historic District, listed in 2005 with more than 550 contributing structures, more than half the buildings in town. Shingle, Stick and Queen Anne houses line the streets. The 2020 census counted 930 residents.
Modest, well-built driveways
Owners of historic shore homes generally want a driveway that does not call attention to itself: narrow, neat, with crisp edges and transitions. We keep layouts modest and can use Belgian block or other borders where they suit the house.
The buried seawall
A stone seawall built in 1882 had been buried under the dunes and largely forgotten until Hurricane Sandy, when it helped reduce damage to the town. Bay Head still sits on sand at the ocean's edge, with a high water table. Driveways need a confined, compacted base and a slope to the street.
Seasonal schedule
Many homes are second homes. Work is easiest to schedule outside the summer, and sealcoating fits best in late spring and early fall.
Roads
Route 35, a two-lane highway, is the main road. The borough maintains about 8 of its 10.7 miles of road.

Sand in, sand out
Coastal wind blows sand across driveways in Bay Head, and storms bring more. A sealed surface sheds sand more easily and resists abrasion. After a storm, sweeping sand off promptly keeps it from grinding the surface.
Under-house and side parking
Some homes in town have been raised, with parking moved under or beside the house. We pave those areas where there is clearance and drainage.
Owners away
For owners who are not in town, we schedule work, send photos and leave the property clean.

Bay Head Questions
Will a new driveway suit a historic house?
We keep the layout modest and the edges clean, with borders if they suit the property.
Can work be done while I am away?
Yes. We schedule in the off-season and send photos when finished.
Does sand under the driveway cause problems?
Only if the base is thin or the edges unsupported. A confined, compacted base handles it.
Can you send photos if I am not there?
Yes. We send photos when the job is done.
