Paving for Constant Growth

Asphalt paving in Lakewood keeps pace with growth unlike anywhere else in the county. Lakewood had 45,048 residents in 1990, 92,843 in 2010 and 135,158 in 2020, a 45.6 percent jump in ten years, and the 2024 estimate of about 142,000 made it New Jersey's fourth-largest municipality. That much growth on about 25 square miles means new homes, additions, multifamily buildings, schools and parking lots going up all the time.

New construction driveways

On new homes and additions, the driveway is often one of the last things built and one of the first things damaged by construction traffic. Concrete trucks, dumpsters and delivery vehicles crush a thin base. If your driveway is new and already cracked, a thin base is the likely cause. For homes still under construction, we often place the base and first layer early and the final surface after heavy deliveries are done.

Multifamily and school lots

Large families and multifamily housing mean lots that hold more cars than they were designed for, plus buses and vans at schools. Entrances, drive lanes and drop-off loops wear first. We rebuild those at full depth and pave or seal the rest, scheduled around school and community calendars.

Rivers and lakes

The North Branch of the Metedeconk forms Lakewood's northern boundary, and the South Branch runs through town and feeds Lake Carasaljo, one of four man-made lakes, beside Georgian Court University. Lots near the water and the river branches are lower and wetter and need a deeper base and good drainage.

A former winter resort

Lakewood was renamed from Bricksburg in 1880 and became a fashionable winter resort; Grover Cleveland wintered there in the early 1890s. Some older streets near the lakes still have large lots from that era, with long driveways that need resurfacing or replacement.

Tight lots and additions

Many Lakewood homes have been expanded, and additions often eat into the driveway or push parking to a new pad. When we replace a driveway after an addition, we lay out parking for the cars the house actually has, set slopes away from the new foundation and build the base under any new pad to match the rest of the driveway so there is no weak seam.

Busy roads

Route 9, Route 70 and Route 88 all pass through Lakewood, and the Parkway's exit 89 brings traffic to Route 70. Work at aprons on those roads falls under NJDOT, while township streets are handled locally.

Lakewood Questions

Can you pave a driveway before construction is finished?

Yes. We often place the base and first layer early, then the final surface after heavy trucks are done.

Can you repave a school lot over the summer?

Yes. We schedule around school calendars and phase work as needed.

My new driveway cracked within a year. Why?

Usually a thin base crushed by construction traffic. We check the base before recommending a fix.
